1956 September Basho, 13th day
Yoshibayama vs. Tochinishiki

(staying in the race)

Tochinishiki came up trying to get a double inside grip but Yoshibayama was able to block him with a pushing attack. Tochinishiki eventually got a left hand inside grip, keeping his much larger opponent off the mawashi in the process. A footsweep attempt by his fellow yokozuna allowed Yoshibayama to get a right hand outside grip. From there, he broke Tochinishiki's balance with an uwatenage, overarm throw attempt then drove him out by yorikiri, frontal force out. That victory helped Yoshibayama remain in the title race until his last day defeat by another yokozuna and the eventual tournament champion, Kagamisato.

1951 January Basho, 12th day
Yoshibayama vs. Haguroyama

(on the way to a major promotion)

Yoshibayama came up thrusting at the tachi-ai or initial charge, eventually getting both hands inside. Haguroyama responded by getting a grip on the front of his opponent's mawashi but was unable to launch any kind of attack. Yoshibayama then got a deep double inside grip and hoisted the yokozuna up and out by tsuridashi, lift out. He finished the basho with a fine 12-3 record, good enough to earn him promotion to ozeki for the following tournament.
