Wakanohana vs. Wajima
(a clash between two undefeated yokozuna)
In this marathon match both yokozuna gained left hand inside
grips at the tachi-ai or initial charge. Wajima, unable to
get a right hand outside grip took a defensive, half stance and
was able to break Wakanohana's inside grip. Both rikishi
attempted a series of lifting and throwing techniques with neither
able to make any headway against the other. Locked in the center
of the ring, a break was called right before the 4:00 mark. After
the match was restarted, the much younger Wakanohana launched a
new attack that drove the senior yokozuna to the edge. Wajima
dug in but was finally driven down and over by yoritaoshi
(frontal crush out). Wakanohana went on to win his second of four
top division titles with a perfect 15-0 record.
