1959 May Basho, last day (play-off)
Wakanohana vs. Tochinishiki

(a come-from-behind title)

Wakanohana was one win off the pace when he faced fellow yokozuna Tochinishiki on the fifteenth day. Beating his undefeated rival in that match forced a play-off. In that deciding match, after a protracted struggle, Wakanohana was finally able to get a right hand outside grip.
Tochinishiki, unable to get his own outside grip, tried to shift his right hand inside. At that instant, Wakanohana pulled in on his opponent's mawashi and launched a drive towards the edge, taking the match by yorikiri, frontal force out. That dramatic win gave Wakanohana his sixth top division championship.

1960 September Basho, 14th day
Wakanohana vs. Kashiwado

(final top division title)

Wakanohana quickly shifted to the right at the tachi-ai or initial charge, getting a right hand outside grip. From that position, he used Kashiwado's own momentum to drop him by uwatenage, overarm throw. With his only rival for the title, sekiwake Taiho, having lost in an earlier match, that victory was good enough to earn Wakanohana his tenth and final top division championship.
