1973 November Basho, 12th day
Wajima vs. Takanohana I

(yokozuna takes title in spite of serious injury)

In this match, recently promoted yokozuna Wajima was facing a man who was to become the greatest ozeki of all time; Takanohana I. At the tachi-ai or initial charge, both men opened their attacks fighting for an advantageous grip. Takanohana then proceeded to switch to a tsuppari or slapping attack but Wajima was able to get a left hand outside, right hand inside grip. At that instant the yokozuna launched his attack, pulling his opponent in and up to beat him by tsuridashi (lift out). That victory left Wajima with a perfect 12-0 record but it proved a costly one; in winning the match he tore the webbing between two fingers of his right hand. After receiving several stitches he attempted to fight the next day but lost. However, his two rivals in that tournament's championship race, sekiwake Kitanoumi and yokozuna Kotozakura both lost on that day as well. This automatically guaranteed Wajima his fourth top division title while allowing him to withdraw on the fourteenth day.

1977 July Basho, 15th and final day
Wajima vs. Kitanoumi

(Wajima's third perfect top division championship)

Going into this final match between two yokozuna, Kitanoumi was one loss off of Wajima's perfect pace. At the tachi-ai or initial charge, Kitanoumi got a right hand outside grip. At the same time, Wajima worked his way into his favorite left hand inside position while wrapping his right arm around his opponent's left.Kitanoumi launched several attacks and after several grip shifts, both rikishi found themselves chest to chest with left hand inside grips. When Kitanoumi attempted to finish the match with a right handed uwatenage, over arm throw, Wajima started his own forward drive, taking the match with a sukuinage, beltless arm throw. This victory turned the fifty-fourth yokozuna's eleventh top division title into a perfect one; the last time in his career he would take the title with a 15-0 record.
