1962 May Basho, last day
Tochinoumi vs. Wakahaguro

(first top division championship)

Facing fellow sekiwake Wakahaguro on the last day, Tochinoumi led with his head at the tachi-ai or initial charge. Quickly getting a deep left hand inside grip, Tochinoumi circled around to drop his much larger opponent with a right sided kirikaeshi, twisting backward knee trip.

Finishing with an outstanding 14-1 record, Tochinoumi took his first top division title as well as his first Fighting Spirit Prize and his sixth Technique Prize. That record was also good enough to earn him promotion to sumo's second highest rank of ozeki for the following tournament.

1964 May Basho, last day
Tochinoumi vs. Taiho

(first top division championship as yokozuna)

Tochinoumi got both hands on the front of Taiho's mawashi and launched a drive towards the edge but Taiho was able to fight back. As Taiho started a drive of his own, Tochinoumi was able to shift his left hand inside to get a double inside grip. He then broke Taiho's balance with a right sided sotogake, outside leg trip, finally taking him with a shitatenage, underarm throw as he drove him backwards.

Tochinoumi finished the tournament with a 13-2 record for what was to be his first and last championship as a yokozuna.
