1954 July Basho, final day
Tochinishiki vs. Wakanohana
(tragedy and triumph)
At the tachi-ai or initial charge, Tochinishiki quickly got
his favorite left hand inside grip and drove his long time rival
out by yorikiri, frontal force out, winning his ninth top
division title with his first perfect 15-0 record. On the previous
day after Tochinishiki had already locked up the championship with
a victory over ozeki Kotogahama, his father died as a result
of a traffic accident making that last day victory a bittersweet
one.
