1970 November Basho, 15th and final day
Tamanoumi vs. Taiho

(a championship play-off)

In the final match of the tournament, Taiho, the senior of the two, beat his fellow yokozuna Tamanoumi to force a play-off for the top division title. In that play-off, Tamanoumi eventually worked his way into a right hand inside grip while keeping Taiho from getting a solid left hand outside. The younger yokozuna than pulled Taiho in, launching a drive towards the edge and finally winning the match by yorikiri or frontal force out. This gave Tamanoumi fourth top division title with an outstanding 14-1 record. It also marked the only time in his career that he was to win back-to-back championships.

1971 July Basho, 15th and final day
Tamanoumi vs. Kitanofuji

(Tamanoumi's final championship)

Tamanoumi opened this match against his long-time friend and rival with a left handed attack to the throat. Kitanofuji responded by working into a left hand inside, right hand outside grip. At the same time, he was able to keep his fellow yokozuna from getting any kind of solid outside grip. Kitanofuji then launched a drive to the edge but Tamanoumi was able to break up this attack with a series of shitatenage, underarm throw attempts. As Kitanofuji attempted to lift his shorter opponent, Tamanoumi was able to achieve an outside grip. Unable to break that grip, Kitanofuji launched another driving attack. Tamanoumi responded with a left handed shitatenage attempt. As Kitanofuji recovered, Tamanoumi started his own drive towards the edge, beating his opponent by or frontal force out. This marked the yokozuna's sixth top division championship and first with a perfect 15-0 record.
