1987 Natsu Basho, 15th and final day
Onokuni vs. Hokutoumi

(Onokuni's first top division title)

Onokuni's fellow ozeki came up with a powerful slapping attack to the face at the tachi-ai or initial charge. Onokuni after resisting this attack, slipped to the left then got a right hand inside, left hand outside grip. He then used his much greater size and strength to drive Hokutoumi to the edge; finally forcing him out and over by yoritaoshi (frontal crush out). That victory enabled Onokuni to take his first top division tournament championship with a perfect 15-0 record in his 11th basho as an ozeki. He earned promotion to yokozuna soon after.

1990 Kyushu Basho, 15th and final day
Onokuni vs. Chiyonofuji

(Onokuni's comeback)

Going into this tournament, yokozuna Onokuni was coming off an unprecedented 4-consecutive basho absence due to injury. His opponent on the last day, fellow yokozuna Chiyonofuji, had already locked up his 31st top division title on the previous day while Onokuni had struggled to a 9-5 record. At the tachi-ai or initial charge, Chiyonofuji quickly got a left hand outside, right hand inside grip, driving his much larger opponent to the edge. Chiyonofuji than attempted to drive Onokuni over with a right sided sotogake (outside leg trip). The Hanaregoma beya giant responded with his own righted sided sotogake attempt. This allowed him to improve his position and before Chiyonofuji could launch another attack, Onokuni threw the senior yokozuna down with a well timed sukuinage (beltless arm throw).
