Mienoumi vs. Asahikuni

(Mienoumi's first top division title)

Fellow sekiwake Asahikuni quickly got a left hand inside grip, keeping his hips back in an attempt to keep Mienoumi off his mawashi. Mienoumi was finally able to get a right hand outside grip and after a long struggle, was able to drive his opponent to the edge. Asahikuni dug in but was unable to stop his larger opponent from forcing him down and out by yoritaoshi (frontal crush out). Mienoumi finished the tournament with a fine 13-2 record, winning his first of three top division titles. That record also earned him both the Outstanding Performance Award and the Technique Prize, while guaranteeing his promotion to ozeki for the following Hatsu Basho.

1980 Hatsu Basho, 15th and final day
Mienoumi vs. Wakanohana

(Mienoumi's last top division title)

Mienoumi, keeping his head low, was able to get a right hand outside grip while slipping his left hand inside. His fellow yokozuna was able to work his own left hand in but Mienoumi's attack had forced him upright. He broke Wakanohana's balance with a right handed uwate-dashinage (pulling overarm throw) and then drove him out by yorikiri (frontal force out). This gave the Dewanoumi beya his first and only back-to-back top division titles and he took this one in grand style; winning it with a perfect 15-0 record.
