1942 May Basho, 14th day
Maedayama vs. Akinoumi
(an all- ozeki match)
In their first meeting as ozeki, Maedayama came up with his patented
slapping attack at the tachi-ai or initial charge. Akinoumi
was able to force the action to the mawashi, getting a left hand inside
and driving his fellow ozeki to the edge. In a terribly weak position,
Medayama was finally able get a right hand outside grip, circle around, and drive
his opponent out and over by yoritaoshi or frontal crush out. |

1947 June Basho, final day
Maedayama vs. Saganohama
(earning a spot in the first play-off)
Both rikishi came to grips and after a heated exchange of attacks and
defenses, Maedayama was able to get a solid left hand outside grip. As his fellow
ozeki's position gradually weakened, Maedayama was able to take Saganohana
with a shitatenage, underarm throw. Although he went on to lose the top
division title in sumo's first play-off, his outstanding performance
that tournament earned him promotion to yokozuna. |
