1970 January Basho, 15th and final day
Kitanofuji vs. Tamanoumi

(a championship play-off leading to a double promotion)

In their final regular match of the tournament, Tamanoumi beat Kitanofuji to force a play-off for the top division championship between the two ozeki. In that play-off, Kitanofuji quickly got a left hand inside, right hand outside grip. As Tamanoumi attempted a lifting technique, Kitanofuji shot out his right leg to take his opponent over by sotogake or outside leg trip. That win, marking his third top division title, gave Kitanofuji back-to-back championships for the first time in his career. It also earned him promotion to yokozuna, along with Tamanoumi, for the following tournament in March.

1972 September Basho, 15th and final day
Kitanofuji vs. Kiyokuni

Kiyokuni opened the match leading with his head. Kitanofuji responded by working into a left hand inside grip. As the ozeki prepared to launch an attack, Kitanofuji attempted a right handed uwatenage, overarm throw followed by his own forward drive. Kiyokuni dug in at the edge but Kitanofuji was able to take him over with a left sided sotogake, outer leg trip. Fighting in front of the crown prince and his family, Kitanofuji won his ninth top division title with a perfect 15-0 record.
