1989 Nagoya Basho, play-off
Hokutoumi vs. Chiyonofuji
(the first play-off in sumo history between two yokozuna fighting out of the same heya)
Hokutoumi came in low and hard at the tachi-ai or initial
charge in an attempt to keep his Kokonoe senior from getting any
kind of grip on the mawashi. Chiyonofuji came in equally
hard and eventually worked his left hand into an inside grip while
getting his right hand well placed on the outside. Hokutoumi did
everything he could to break that grip but was soon beaten as Chiyonofuji
unleashed a powerful uwatenage (overarm throw). That play-off
victory marked Chiyonofuji's 28th top division title while earning
a place in the annals of sumo history as the first time two yokozuna
competing out of the same heya went head-to-head for the
championship.

1990 Haru Basho, play-off
Hokutoumi vs. Konishiki
(the final round of a marathon three way play-off)
For the first time in 25 years, the top division title was to be
decided in a three way play-off to be fought by yokozuna
Hokutoumi, ozeki Konishiki and sekiwake Kirishima
after all three rikishi finished with identical 13-2 records.
Under these circumstances a rikishi must win two matches
in a row to claim the championship and Hokutoumi lost his first
match to Konishiki. However Konishiki lost to Kirishima in his next
match, giving the yokozuna at least one more chance at the
title. After Hokutoumi beat Kirishima by oshidashi (frontal
push out) he was matched up once again with the Hawaiian born giant.
The yokozuna got off a solid tachi-ai or initial charge,
getting inside before Konishiki had a change to launch his patented
thrusting attack. Hokutoumi drove into his much larger opponent,
forcing the ozeki upright. As Konishiki resisted Hokutoumi's
attack, the yokozuna took his opponent in the opposite direction,
throwing him with a left handed shitatenage (underarm throw).
With that victory, Hokutoumi claimed his 6th Makunouchi division
championship.
