1989 Haru Basho, 14th day
Chiyonofuji vs. Onokuni

(Chiyonufuji's 27th title)

Both rikishi shifted to the left at the tachi-ai or initial charge, with Chiyonofuji getting a left hand outside grip while slipping his right hand inside. He followed this with a powerful right sided sotogake (outside leg trip) attack. Onokuni attempted to launch his own attack but Chiyonofuji was able to break it up with an arm throw attempt, finally beating his fellow yokozuna by uwatenage (overarm throw). That victory guaranteed the Kokone beya star his 27th top division title but it came with a price as he dislocated his left shoulder in the process.

1990 Haru Basho, 7th day
Chiyonofuji vs. Hananokuni

(Chiyonofuji's 1,000th career victory)

At the tachi-ai or initial charge, Chiyonofuji immediately got a right hand inside grip while getting a solid left hand on the outside of his opponent's mawashi. Without giving Hananokuni a moment to get set, he executed a lightning like right handed sukuinage (beltless arm throw). The throw was so powerful and so well timed, the yokozuna was able to lift Hananokuni clear off his feet. That win was an unprecedented moment in an already illustrious career as it marked Chiyonofuji's 1,000th career victory.
