1949 January Basho, final day
Azumafuji vs. Saganohana
(a dramatic yokozuna debut)
With newly promoted Azumafuji's closest rival, Kuninobori, picking up his third
loss on the last day, a win over ozeki Saganohana would give the yokozuna
the top division title in his yokozuna debut. After a titanic struggle
Azumafuji beat the ozeki by yorikiri or frontal force out, to
take his second Makuuchi championship overall and first as a yokozuna
with a fine record of 10-2 and one draw. |

1953 September Basho, 13th day
Azumafuji vs. Chiyonoyama
(locking up the last title)
Following a tremendous exchange of attacks and counters, Azumafuji was able to
get a right hand outside grip and pull his fellow yokozuna in while launching
a drive towards the edge. Chiyonoyama fought back but Azumafuji threw his weight
into his opponent, forcing him to collapse by sabaori or forward force
down. With the giant yokozuna's closest rivals falling three matches
off the pace in earlier bouts, that victory locked up his sixth and final top
division championship. |
