1956 March Basho, 14th day
Asashio vs. Chiyonoyama
(a major step towards first title)
As Chiyonoyama came up with a slapping attack, Asashio responded
with a pushing attack of his own, driving out the yokozuna
by oshidashi or frontal push out.
After winning his final day match, Asashio faced ozeki Wakanohana
I and maegashira Wakahaguro in a three-way play-off for the
top division championship. Beating both men earned him his first
title as well as his fourth Outstanding Performance Award.

1958 November Basho, final day
Asashio vs. Wakanohana I
At the tachi-ai or initial charge both men came up thrusting
with Asashio the first to get a right hand outside grip. To keep
Wakanohana from getting his own outside grip, Asashio buried his
head in the yokozuna's chest. He followed this up with a
steady attack from the left side, eventually winning the match by
yorikiri or frontal force out.
Asashio finished the tournament with a 14-1 record for his fourth
top division championship as well as the only title he was to take
outside of Osaka.
