Asahifuji vs. Chiyonofuji

(Asahifuji earns yokozuna promotion)

A the the tachi-ai or initial charge, Asahifuji shifted to the left and immediately got a left hand outside grip. Chiyonofuji was able to get his right hand inside but was unable to get his own grip on his opponent's mawashi. Asahifuji, with his head in the yokozuna's chest, attempted to knock Chiyonofuji over with a left sided sotogake (outside leg trip.) Keeping on the offensive, Asahifuji was then able to get a double inside grip, driving Chiyonofuji backwards. The yokozuna dug in and tried to break up his opponent's attack with a right handed uwatenage (overarm throw). Asahifuji responded with his own, right handed sukuinage (beltless arm throw). That proved the winning technique, earning Asahifuji his second consecutive top division title in a row and promotion to yokozuna for the following Aki Basho.

1991 Haru Basho, 13th day
Asahifuji vs. Takahanada

(Asahifuji makes quick work of a future superstar)

Takahanada (later to become yokozuna Takanohana) in his first match against a yokozuna was given a textbook example of what yokozuna sumo is all about. At the tachi-ai or initial charge, Asahifuji came up hard and fast, quickly getting a double inside grip. Immediately driving his young opponent to the edge, the yokozuna forced Takahanada out and over by yoritaoshi ( frontal crush out).
