1942 January Basho, final day
Akinoumi vs. Terukuni
(beating a junior ozeki )
Although ozeki Akinoumi went undefeated over the first 12 days of this tournament,
back-to-back losses to the Tatsunami beya yokozuna , Futabayama and Haguroyama,
dropped him one match off the title pace. After an all out exchange of attacks
and defenses, Akinoumi beat rookie ozeki Terukuni by sukuinage
or beltless arm throw. Even though he lost the championship, that victory allowed
him to finish the tournament with an outstanding 13-2 record. |

1942 May Basho, 12th day
Akinoumi vs. Nayoroiwa
(on the way to yokozuna promotion)
Undefeated after 11 days of action, Akinoumi beat sekiwake Nayoroiwa
by yoritaoshi or frontal crush out on the 12th day. He finished this
basho with another outstanding 13-2, good enough to tie the tournament
winning record* and earn him promotion, along with fellow ozeki Terukuni,
to the rank of yokozuna.
*Note: This was before the introduction of the play-off system. In the case of
a tie, the title automatically went to the higher ranked rikishi. |
