Kashiwado vs. Taiho
ˇĘShitate dashi-nageˇË |
| The first meeting between the two men who's rivalry would create sumo's second post W.W. II golden age took place on the twelfth day of the 1960 Hatsu Basho. Taiho, in his top division debut was undefeated after eleven days. Kashiwado was a young komusubi and the man chosen to be Taiho's first test against the top rankers. Taiho came up with an agressive left handed pushing attack but Kashiwado was able to fight back with a left hand inside grip. Both rikishi took turns improving their position but Kashiwado was finally able to drag his rookie opponent into the clay with a left handed shitate-dashinage (pulling underarm throw). Kashiwado finished with a 9-6 record and the Technique Prize while Taiho wound up with an outstanding 12-3 record and the Fighting Spirit Prize. |
